A Visit to the National Gallery of Canada During Covid-19

Art, Canada, Ontario, Ottawa

Now more than ever it’s important to support your local arts institutions. Covid-19 has had a major impact on the tourist industry and the arts. When the National Gallery of Canada reopened in July I visited and it was so nice to be back at one of my favourite places. With limited capacity and mandatory mask wearing I felt very safe visiting. During normal times I find it easy to visit the NGC without crowds and now it’s even less busy. If you have the chance please go out and support your local arts institutions (as long as you feel safe doing so and don’t have any symptoms of course). Continue reading for some photos of the beautiful empty gallery spaces.

Frida Kahlo at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec & Covid-19

Art, Canada, Québec, Québec City, Travel

On our way home from a little weekend trip to northern Québec we decide to take a little detour to pass through Québec City to see the exhibition Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism: The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. I had hoped to write a little review of this exhibition but instead I’m going to share my experience of visiting a blockbuster exhibition in the time of Covid-19.

Snapshots from Québec City

Canada, Québec, Québec City, Travel

On our way home from a weekend in northern Québec we detoured to historic Québec City for a couple hours to wander the old city. Suffice to say, 3 hours is not enough time and we’ll be back soon to see more of this beautiful place. Until then, there are some snapshots for around beautiful Vieux-Québec.

A Day Trip to Prince Edward County

Canada, Ontario, Prince Edward County, Travel

With summer travel options being pretty limited in the time of Covid-19 we decided to do a little day trip to Prince Edward County to catch the lavender bloom in July. PEC is one of our favourite places to visit and although we already have a weekend booked for September we just couldn’t wait until then to return.

Ottawa In Bloom & The Canadian Tulip Festival

Canada, Ottawa, Photography

** Due to the Covid-19 pandemic it is important to maintain social distancing when out in public and avoid congregating in groups. Please visit the flowers responsibly this season **

Springtime in Ottawa is one of the best seasons when all the flowers start to bloom and it finally feels like winter is over. It may take a bit of time for it to finally happen and there may be a number of rainy and cold days but when the sun comes out Ottawa shines. The annual Canadian Tulip Festival is the star of the spring season in Ottawa with thousands of tulips blooming through out the city.

Prince Edward County Travel Guide

Canada, Food, Ontario, Prince Edward County, Travel

Prince Edward County is one of Canada’s best (and littlest) wine regions with so much to offer, and only 3 hours from Ottawa. This was our second year visiting the County and we got to explore even more of this great area. Now that I’ve had the chance to try more wineries and breweries, some great restaurants, do some shopping and spend some time just exploring the region I’m ready to share my favourite spots in PEC! The Edward Bed & Breakfast in Prince Edward County

Canada, Ontario, Prince Edward County, Travel

For my birthday weekend I really wanted to visit Prince Edward County to explore more of the region and of course visit some wineries. Usually when travelling we stay in Airbnbs and if we do stay in hotels we never spend much time there. For this trip I wanted to splurge a bit and stay at The Edward Bed & Breakfast to have a relaxing vacation and a cozy place to stay that we would actually want to spend time at. The Edward was absolutely amazing down to every last detail and truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

Prince Edward County Winery Guide

Canada, Ontario, Prince Edward County, Travel

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting Prince Edward County for the second time. The region has really exploded in the last 5 years and now there is just so much to do. One of the big draws is all the wineries, there are now 40! Between my two trip I’ve visited a good number of wineries and vineyards. This guide has my favourites, some other solid places, ones we won’t be back to and ones I hope to go to on my next visit. I’ve also thrown in a cider house, distillery and brewery that are too good to miss.

Brian Jungen Friendship Centre at the AGO

Art, Toronto

Last time I was down around Toronto I stopped into the Art Gallery of Ontario to see their new exhibition, Brian Jungen Friendship Centre (June 20 – August 25, 2019). Jungen is a Dane-Zaa / Swiss artist based in British Columbia. Although a lot of his artwork is related to his Indigenous heritage he also looks at issues of environmentalism and consumerism. Jungen is probably best know for his mask sculptures that use Nike Air Jordan sneakers to create Indigenous style masks. The new exhibition at the AGO is the largest exhibition of his work and is meant to be an in-depth exploration of his artwork.

Alight At Night – Christmas at Upper Canada Village

Canada, Ontario, Ottawa

Christmas at Upper Canada Village is one of the best places to see lights during the holiday season. I usually end up going after Christmas to see the Alight at Night festival to extend the Christmas season a bit. I love just walking around seeing all the pretty lights and there are also horse drawn wagon rides.
